On the sixth day of the later half of the month of Shravana Vikram Era 1879, Swami Shri Sahajanandji Maharaj was seated on a wooden-cot in the court of Dada khachar at Gadhada. He was dressed completely in lily-white. Saints and followers from far and wide were seated in front of Him.

Then Shriji Maharaja addressed to the whole saintly gathering “Listen I put before you a question.” There is a certain ascetic who worships God. Physically he is very firm in his present. He has a keen passion to enjoy all the worldly pleasures. Yet he is not fallen. So firm is he in his asceticism. There is another person who is purely a householder. He is a devotee. He is married too. He is completely free from all pessions. When they die, I don't know, what will be the condition of their souls after death ? will they attain the same state or will they attain still more wretched state” ?

Gopalanand Swami was present in the meeting. He answered Maharaj's question. “ That ascetic when he passes away has keen passion to enjoy these worldly pleasures. Hence will born again. And that God-fearing householder will go to Heaven and will permanently attain bliss at the feet of God. The ascetic will repent and then he will start worshiping God. When he is free from all passions, he will go to Heaven”.

On hearing this, Shriji Maharaja said, “ You have answered correctly ”. Than the question is, ” How passions can be removed ? A person who like Uka khachar's addictions to service to saints, has the similar addiction to service to God and His followers and without which it would be difficult for him to pass even a minute, will successfully avoid all worldly passions ” said Shriji Maharaja.

Swayamprakashananda Swami Questioned; `'O Maharaja ! How can God be easily pleased ? “ “ The God is easily pleased with a person who even on receiving the kingdom of the whole world, still remains as humble as before and with the same fond of love serve to the saints ever before ” replied Maharaja.

1. This lesson has been quoted from the Gadhada Prakarana in Vachanamrit. In this story Shriji Maharaja has weighed on both the ascetic and a householder who spends his life in service of God and who remains firm in his present and serves saints is not in anyway inferior to an ascetic spending the whole life in search of God. A balance has on two pans on either side. Similarly, the Sampradaya has two dishes known as a Grihastha Hari Bhakta (A householder engrossed in God's Worship) and a Tyagi Hari Bhkata (An Ascetic engrossed in God's worship) and the Acharya-Deva - The Master - is the beam holding these two scales.
